Wear fair

Buddha Wear designs clothes for women of integrity, so producing garments with integrity is very much the cornerstone of our business.

Our ‘Wear Fair’ policy means more than fair conditions and a fair wage. Buddha Wear contributes to our employees’ healthcare and childcare costs, plus we take the time to celebrate important cultural ceremonies and occasions that matter to each individual.

Our manufacturing premises are spacious and comfortable, and we work hard to ensure our employees enjoy coming to work for us; many, in fact, have remained loyal for years.

We also offer work to highly skilled people, particularly women, in more remote areas where childcare is non-existent. This means women can work at home to earn an income while still caring for children and carrying out their home duties. With the opportunity to work for Buddha Wear comes the prospect of contributing to the family wage and the greater community, and to build self-esteem.

The exploitation of garment factory workers was highlighted tragically with Bangladesh’s Rana Plaza collapse in 2013. Conditions like those endured by workers there are unfortunately a common reality of the global clothing manufacturing business. Buddha Wear vehemently opposes treating workers poorly. The welfare of our workers is paramount. We campaign for other companies to commit more to the people who make it all happen.

Staff Conditions

We call it our ‘Wear Fair’ policy: fair conditions, a fair wage, and much more. We ensure that our manufacturing premises are spacious and comfortable, and we work hard to provide an environment where all our employees, from our admin assistants to our shop staff, enjoy coming to work for us; many, in fact, have remained loyal for years. Our staff receive health benefits, plus subsidized meals and after-school childcare. It is very important for us to know our staff, their faces, and their families.

The welfare of our workers is paramount. Our normal working day is eight hours. It’s important to us that our staff come from a mix of backgrounds; it’s partly practical but it also keeps our workplace multicultural and harmonious. We respect the religion of each staff member, and they get the holidays they need to meet their religious obligations, whether they be Hindu, Muslim, or Christian.

Environment

Buddha Wear only uses materials supplied by companies whose production isn’t directly harmful to the environment. We spend considerable time seeking out certified eco-friendly companies and personally visit them to witness firsthand their manufacturing processes, and their staff conditions.

We work hard to ensure reduced waste. We make the most of everything we have. For instance, we use our fabric offcuts to make scrunchies and hairbands—and these turned into an all-time best-seller for us. We use offcuts to line our Buddha Wear bags and tiny leftovers too small for us to use are sold as filling for mattresses. We don’t throw away any fabric at all. This works for the benefit of our customers, too, because the less waste we have, the lower our prices can be.

Naturally we also recycle, working in conjunction with Eco Bali. All our staff have their own water bottles, which they refill as often as they like all day. We have reusable tote bags in our retail stores rather than plastic.

Giving Back

Buddha Wear donates a portion of their profit to Bali Street Mums, which provides resources including shelter, clothing, education, basic health care and food to impoverished women and children living in the Balinese capital, Denpasar.
